Pram of the Month – May
Silver Cross coachbuilt pram in wartime Leeds
Sadly this week I lost a dear friend, a lifelong friend of my parents and as was usual in the days of my childhood, friends like this were called “auntie” or “uncle” and I always called her Auntie Delia, even though on my wedding day she told me as I was now a married woman it was time to lose the “auntie” and just call her Delia. Whenever I called her Auntie in company she would always say “I am not her real auntie you know” and we would laugh.
Had Delia lived a few more weeks she would have celebrated her 100th birthday in July, but over the last few months her health had deteriorated greatly and she had to move from her apartment into a Nursing Home a year ago, until then she coped by herself, even managing to walk up three flights of stairs almost daily as there was no lift in there!
You are probably wondering why I am telling you this on a pram site, well it is because Auntie Delia used to love to hear about our prams and to look at photos from our pram walks and marvel how prams had changed over her lifetime from the solid wooden deep bodied prams to today’s flimsy buggies.
Never having been blessed with children herself Delia had to be content with her numerous nieces and nephews, and great and even great great ones. A couple of years ago she was telling me how one young relative had been to visit with her baby in “the most stupid contraption for a baby I have ever seen”. Yes, Delia was a fan of traditional prams and told me a wonderful story of how she managed to obtain a pram for her brother’s wife when their first baby was expected in wartime in the 1940′s.
Prams were very scarce as pram manufacturers had to lessen production of prams and concentrate on producing parts for planes, as indeed the Silver Cross factory in Guiseley, Leeds was taken over for that purpose with only a few prams being made. Delia’s mother decided that this new grandchild of hers would have nothing but the best, a Silver Cross coachbuilt pram, and one was ordered from Sillers pram shop in Leeds, a very well known shop until it closed several years ago. Sillers took the order but could not guarantee a pram would become available as demand outstripped supply so it was arranged that a refund would be made if a pram was not ready when the baby arrived.
As was usual in those days Delia gave up work when she got married but in wartime childless women up to a certain age were ordered to take a job that had probably been done previously by men and she was sent to work as a bus conductress. (Below is a picture from a few years ago of a York bus advertising Silver Cross prams on the back). (photos courtesy of Silver Cross)
One day as the bus was passing Sillers pram shop there was a lorry delivering a consignment of new prams so Delia repeatedly rang the bell and told the driver to stop the bus! She rushed off to the lorry and placing her hand on one of the prams she told the shop assistant taking charge of the delivery “this one is mine”. “Nay lass, they are all ordered” he told her in his Yorkshire accent, “Yes, I know, my mother has ordered this one” she told him, knowing that her mother had indeed ordered (and paid) for a pram but no date had been given for delivery. I imagine the shop assistant dare not argue with her, and Delia wheeled the pram onto the bus platform and it travelled back to the depot with her, then after work she wheeled it several miles home.
Her brother and his wife were delighted that they had secured a pram for their expected baby but it was not allowed in their house until after the birth, due to superstition, so it was kept at Delia’s. She told me that she loved to have a little wheel of it around the house until it was needed. I did ask if she could remember the model but she could only tell me that it was “a proper pram that was used until the little one was about 3, but not one of those on the massive wheels” so I am guessing it was a droptoe model.
This picture is of a Silver Cross “Aristocrat” low model, from the 1940′s, it is described as having a concealed foot extension and an adjustable backrest, the hood and apron were in fadeless fabric and the interior described as “non crackable”.
I talked to Delia about our pram events and she was really interested to hear about our jaunts and I feel I owe it to her to write this piece to share with you all her story of how she commandeered a much sought after Silver Cross pram in wartime! I know she would have been delighted to think this is going to be read all over the world, including as far as Australia and New Zealand, places she visited many times herself. And I am sure had she been a few years younger she would have loved to have joined us on the pram outings, she used to joke a pram would help her walk much better than her walking frame!
After Delia moved into the Nursing Home on one of my visits we were talking about prams and one of the Care Assistants overheard us and asked if I would like to take a pram along on a visit and give a Talk to the residents. I agreed to do this in summer and I shall still do so even though Delia won’t be there. I have already done this at other Care Homes near to where I live and it is so nice to hear the residents recalling their own memories and they all love to have a push of the pram that I take along with me. In previous posts I mentioned where Care Homes had prams on display as therapy for the residents, maybe you have a similar story you would like to share?

Airliner pram
After seeing the Pram of the Month for May, a Vintage Pram Fan very kindly got in touch to say she had one like this as a child! How wonderful to here from this lady, here is her message:
I was absolutely thrilled to see the picture of the Super Toy Airliner as Pram of the Month – May.I had one as a child, and loved it and played with it until I was in my early teens, then my Mothergot rid of it, saying I was too old to play with prams!!!! I was heart broken, and never really forgaveher for not telling me where it had gone.Over the years (I am 78 now) I have searched for the pram and looked for pictures and catalogues showing the pram, but have never found one, until today, when I opened your email, and there it is – a picture of my dolls prams. I was and am thrilled. Can you tell me who the maker is, I assumed it is Silver Cross, but cannot be sure of that. Also is it possible to copy thecatalogue for me. I would be so thrilled to have a copy and after all these years of searching,I now feelhappy that somebody else knows about it.SincerelyLorna KentWell Lorna, unfortunately I don’t have the full brochure of this pram, which was indeed made by Silver Cross, but I have forwarded a picture to you and thank you so much for sharing your lovely story with us.If anyone else would like to leave a comment

Vintage Pram Collectors’ Weekend May 2013
As many of you know, on 11th and 12th May the Wedgwood Museum in Stoke on Trent hosted the second Pram Collectors’ Weekend. This year the event was over two days, giving people the option to stay for both days or visit on either Saturday or Sunday. Regrettably the weather was not very good, English summers are not very predictable, but nevertheless the event was well attended and I am sure everyone enjoyed themselves.
Over the next few posts I will be adding more pictures taken over the weekend, adding information about the prams and their owners, I met some very nice interesting people and if I didn’t manage to meet you then hopefully next time.
Here are some of the photos I took inside the main hall where stallholders had set out their wares, for example Fringe Benefits had displays of beautifully embroidered pram quilts, Roberson Miniatures had some amazing miniature prams for sale, another stall was selling pram brochures, several had reborn dolls for sale and others had clothes and bedding. A wonderful marketplace for all things pram related!
One lady had a wonderful display of beautiful prams for sale, and one of them sold at the weekend to a visitor from Australia who had come especially to the Event to find a pram. More on this and others in a future post, but what an amazing find!
Browse the pictures and you can see for yourself some of the things on display:
The Wedgwood factory had produced a china mug, pictured here, to commemorate the Weekend, this year’s has a green plaque similar to the one on the Wedgwood coachbuilt prams.

Vintage Pram Emporium
A lovely lady, Chrissie Hall, has recently set up her own business offering a bespoke service for vintage prams and had a very nice display of prams and related goods on offer at the Wedgwood Pram Collectors’ Event earlier this month, I thought I would share this with Vintage Pram Fans as I know many of you are often looking for suppliers/restorers etc. Chrissie has her own website, which outlines the services she can offer and more about herself and her company, why not have a look:
www.vintagepramemporium.com
Based in Norfolk, the company offers a service worldwide and indeed at the Wedgwood event a couple had travelled all the way from Australia to search for a special pram. They admired the prams on display by Chrissie and bought one from her, the pram will now be crated and sent to the other side of the world. What a great start to Chrissie’s new venture to have such an order at one of her first pram events! Here’s hoping she makes many more successful sales!
Below is a picture taken at the Wedgwood event showing some of the prams on display by Chrissie and her team of helpers, Pauline and Jacky.
Pram of the Month – June
This month the Pram of the Month is not just one, but two prams! A full size baby model and a dolls version, owned by Andy and Rita from Yorkshire, the Fleur De Lys baby pram and the Super Delia dolls pram which is a smaller replica. I saw both these at the Wedgwood Pram Collectors’ Event in May and they are truly special prams.
Andy told me that his daughter had said she would like a Fleur De Lys pram when she has children, his daughter was married a short time ago and while she was on honeymoon her brother (who was also at the Wedgwood event) saw one advertised and bought it for her as a surprise. They then bought the doll’s version which is called “the Delia”. Both prams have been lovingly restored by Andy and his son.
Rita, Andy’s wife, is the very talented seamstress who makes pram sets for their collection of prams and managed to source some fabric adorned with Fleur De Lys emblems, enough material to make not only quilts for both prams but also a beautiful canopy cover too.
Having made the quilt Rita then appliqued a Fleur De Lys emblem on the foldover flap and the result is a unique, specially designed pram set which complements each pram beautifully, adorned with lace and frills these draperies add special finishing touches to an already stunning pram.
Rita and Andy, and their son, have a collection of other prams, including a rare Winston model, which will be featured in another post. Those of you who were at Wedgwood may have noticed Andy dressed in flamboyant Seventies clothes, complete with flare trousers and a very colourful tank top, knitted in pyschadelic colours by a relative especially for the occasion.
And below are more pictures and information (courtesy of Silver Cross) about both prams:

Vintage Pram parade
Here is a selection of prams which were on display at the Pram Collectors’ Weekend in May. As you can see, there were prams of many different makes and styles and ages, and some of the pram owners dressed in costume according to the era of their pram. These pictures were taken as visitors prepared to walk around the courtyard in a Parade of Prams, the ones in the photos are of rarer models, the Wedgwood in the top picture for example. The picture at the bottom right is of Andy, who I mentioned in June’s Pram of the Month story, here he is pushing another pram from his collection, this one is the Winston, another rare model.

Don’t worry if you don’t have a pram from the era specified, most people have little idea of how old a coachbuilt pram is likely to be, so it doesn’t really matter if you take a 1970s pram to a 1940s event, although it is better if you can dress yourself and your baby in outfits fitting to the period.
I think most areas are covered, but none in Scotland. There are vintage pram fans in Scotland so if you know of an event there do let me know so others can find out more.

Pram of the Month – July
The Pram of the Month for July is a pram I had never seen except in pictures, until the recent Pram Collectors’ Weekend at the Wedgwood Museum, it is the Wilson Eugenie model, made by Silver Cross. This picture shows the pram in a very elegant shade of grey, but I have also seen photos of it in maroon, I have to say I prefer this one. The Eugenie was launched around 1960 and was available in two models, the A model which had 22 x 18 inch wheels and cost 30 guineas, or the B model which was on 24 x 20 inch wheels, the interior was fitted with box cushions and the trim around the hood was in Nottingham lace rather than the more usual braid, this more luxurious version cost an extra four guineas.
Maybe you knew someone who had one of these prams,
or maybe you had one yourself,
or maybe it was yours that I saw at the Wedgwood Museum,
if so please get in touch,
by visiting www.vintagepramfan.com
and leaving a comment.
Vintage Coachbuilt pram model – Eugenie by Wilson,
July’s Pram of the Month was the Eugenie, featured in grey, so I thought you might like to also see the different version of this where the regency stripes are in burgundy.
Which do you prefer? This colour or the grey one featured earlier?

EVENTS FOR 2013
As I write this we are having beautiful sunny weather here in the UK, so get those prams out and about, lots of events coming up where you can attract attention. This past weekend a group of us from the International Vintage Pram and Doll Club spent a very enjoyable day at Port Sunlight, the delightful village famous for Lever brothers products. our prams attracted a lot of interest as we strolled around the village, I will be adding pictures shortly.
The events listed here are all organised events but if there isn’t one near you then why not organise your own at a suitable park or tourist spot?
Don’t worry if you don’t have a pram from the era specified, most people have little idea of how old a coachbuilt pram is likely to be, so it doesn’t really matter if you take a 1970s pram to a 1940s event, although it is better if you can dress yourself and your baby in outfits fitting to the period.
I think most areas are covered, but none in Scotland. There are vintage pram fans in Scotland so if you know of an event there do let me know so others can find out more.
If you are hoping to go to an event then do add a comment by going to the website www.VintagePramFan.com so arrangements can be made for others to meet you there. We can make 2013 a year when more of us get together to show off our prams, this a good way to meet other pram enthusiasts and spread the word that our prams are just as important as other classic vehicles!
The listings shown here are a guide only, please check out the contact details shown in each listing for more details. I will update the listings as more information is submitted.

Silver Cross Coachbuilt pram for Kate’s new Royal Baby?
As I write this we are awaiting news of the imminent arrival of the Royal Baby, Kate Middleton is in labour so we have to wait for news, but maybe when you read this you will already know whether we have a new Prince or Princess.
I find it interesting listening to some of the news reporters trying to fill in time with snippets of information about whether the baby will be a boy or girl, what it will be called, its weight etc etc.
But not one of them has mentioned the type of pram the Royal couple are likely to have for their new arrival. I know most of us who are on this site are hoping they will choose a coachbuilt pram, perhaps one handed down through the family?
We don’t know if Silver Cross have presented a coachbuilt pram to Kate and William, as the only remaining manufacturer in England of the traditional baby carriages it would be a wonderful gesture. In 1977 when Princess Anne had her first son the company presented her with a pram of her choice, in fact she had a coachbuilt and a carrycot and transporter, as were fashionable at the time.
I am reliably informed that when the company decided to present a pram to the Princess several models were taken to the Palace from a large London store and Princess Anne and her Nanny looked to see which they would prefer and the Super Burley, in British Racing Green, was chosen. Apparently the final say went to the Nanny as she would be the one taking the baby out for walks in the Royal grounds.
The picture to illustrate this piece is of a Nanny pushing a Silver Cross twin pram! Now has anyone considered the possibility that Kate could be having twins? Or are we to assume by the size of her bump that there will be just one Royal Baby!
If you have any comments and would like to share your thoughts on this

Pram of the Month – August
This month’s featured pram is one from the 1930′s and features a two seater pram, called the “Cose-Car” made by Silver Cross, ideal for the mother with two young children, twins or of similar ages.
The picture shows the pram with a seat built into the handle end of the pram and I have included the manufacturer’s information which explains in detail the measurements and more information.

PRAM TALKS
Some time ago I was discussing my interest in vintage prams with a group of friends, one of them was a member of a local organisation and asked if I would like to give a Talk to them. I agreed and this first Talk was very well received and a lot of interest was shown by people in the audience.
I began by asking them how many different makes of pram they could name, unsurprisingly Silver Cross came at the top of the list and I went on to explain that not all coachbuilt prams are made by this company, which many of them didn’t realise. Knowing that whenever any vintage pram fans take out a pram they are often told “I had a Silver Cross just like this” I thought it was time to dispel the myth!
As I have done a lot of research into Silver Cross, more so than any other make, my Talks often focus on the beginnings of the company and also as I am from Yorkshire, I have a special affection for Silver Cross. Most of my Talks initially were in the Yorkshire area, but now I am being invited to other areas, spreading the word and hopefully saving prams from being discarded. I find there are regional differences in the make of pram that people used too, in Yorkshire it is mainly Silver Cross and Marmet, but further south other makes were popular.
Last year I was staying with a friend in Scotland and went along with her to the local Ladies group meeting, as it happened that evening members were discussing things they collect. I have to say there were a few raised eyebrows when I said I collect prams! But of course, the other ladies were very interested and before I knew it I was giving an impromptu Talk to them.
I have been asked to speak to elderly residents at Care/Nursing Homes as reminiscing about their younger days is of interest, as well as being invited to Coffee mornings at several libraries and attending various social groups who have a speaker at their meetings. I prefer to have a screen to use with Powerpoint because everyone loves to look at pictures of vintage prams and I have a carefully chosen selection, the oohs and aahs from the audience as they see each pram is rewarding in itself.
I always take along a pram so people can have a push and revive their own memories. There are occasionally a few odd comments about a reborn doll being in the pram but when I explain this is simply a prop for the pram, and also that it is supposed to be unlucky to push an empty pram, it is accepted as nothing out of the ordinary. Regrettably television programmes about women who collect reborn babies for a hobby have done more harm than good, portraying them as being “odd”, but again another myth is dispelled at my Talks.
Dressed in a nice pram set and, throughout this summer a canopy, the pram always attracts a lot of attention. At a recent Talk a young mother attended and brought her two young daughters as it was the school holidays, it was a pleasure to see the delight on the girls’ faces as they wheeled the pram around and they were thrilled when I said they could wheel it out to my car.
What began as an informal discussion amongst friends has given me a new interest and I have to say I thoroughly enjoy passing on information about our love of prams. There have been a few converts who have expressed interest in joining pram walks, others have said they still have a pram stored away and almost everyone has a memory to share. The ladies always tell me about the pram they had for dolls as a child and then go on to mention the prams they had for their own babies, whereas the men without fail say they loved pram wheels for making go carts!

Hints and tips
It is now over two years since I started this website, primarily intended to help with restoration of coachbuilt prams, but as time has gone on it has evolved into a website with all kinds of information about them. However, if you are new to the site and wish to find out about a certain topic it might take a while to trawl through all the previous posts. Therefore, if you want to look for something specific go to the website www.vintagepramfan.com and at the top right hand side of the page there is a Search box. If you type in the topic you are looking for you will be redirected to relevant pages.
I am also being asked if the book on Pram Restoration is available as a “proper” book instead of a Kindle download. At the moment this is being looked into, I have had several quotes for printing the booklets and it is now a case of deciding which is the most economical way to get this done without having to charge a silly price for the finished books. The benefits of downloading the book from Amazon onto a Kindle device are that you are less likely to mislay the book, it won’t get dog-eared and nobody can borrow it from you, we all know how often books are borrowed but never returned.
If you want to buy the download version of the book there is a link on the right hand side of this page on the website and it is really very simple to set up an Amazon account if you don’t already have one.
Pram of the Month – September
The pram of the month for September is a Wilsonette by Silver Cross from the 1930′s. The price was 22/6d, just over one pound ten pence in todays money!! I presume the canopy was available at an extra cost but I don’t have information on this and I am not sure if in those days a hood and apron were available.
The pram was advertised as having a reversible seat, very useful pushchairs and these were very popular well into the sixties. Looking at the photo the design was changed slightly over the years, the wheels look bigger than later models and if you look closely at the footrest you can see the Silver Cross logo which was changed in the 1940s as it resembled a swastika.
Coachbuilt pram choice
“Today’s Grandmothers are often startled by the changes in pram design. Not so long ago, high wheeled, coachbuilt carriages were considered the only possible thing to have, but as more people live in smaller homes, such prams are often believed to be impractical.”
Does this ring any bells with you? Well, it is taken from a magazine article from 50 years ago but I am sure it is still true today as our older generation tut tut at the latest golf trolley prams that modern parents seem to favour. Personally I think the change in designs is due to several factors, pram manufacturers know that young parents are the ones most likely to opt for the lastest fashion, hence the pram design may remain the same but each season (or so it seems) new fabric designs are on sale, ensuring yet more sales as parents keep up with the latest trend.
Another reason is that more men are involved in wheeling prams these days and although some of them prefer a traditional coachbuilt (as I know from comments received when taking out my grandbaby), others look on a pram rather like a car. They want something that looks “racy” or “sporty” and this will probably influence the expectant mother in what she chooses.
And of course there is the fact that most of us now own a car so the days of walking to the shops with a baby in a pram and leaving both outside while you went shopping are long gone so they need something that easily folds.
When I was expecting my first baby in the early seventies I had a Mini and turned my nose up at the family pram, a Wilson Silver Shadow, in favour of a Berkeley which had a detachable chassis. I was sure the bed would fit neatly on the backseat and the chassis in the boot, how naive was I! Not only didn’t the pram fit in my Mini but it was too heavy to carry anyway with the baby in and where could I put the baby while I went outside to the car, I wasn’t going to leave him alone for a minute. My baby was only a couple of weeks old when I told my husband that I needed a carrycot and transporter as well as the pram, then when the baby grew a bit older I needed a pushchair. We bought a Silver Cross pushchair but when one of my neighbours bought a Maclaren buggy I needed one of those too. Then when I had my second baby I decided I needed yet another pushchair, one similar to a Wilsonette as I thought they would be more comfy for my baby, my mum agreed with me on this and said this type of pram was more practical for holidays as the baby could sleep and be protected from the wind and rain better than in a buggy.
I could say this was the beginning of my obsession with prams, but no, it began much earlier than that when I was a little girl!
